A Black IPA is a craft beer with the dryness, hop balance and flavour characteristics of an American IPA, but dark in colour. The darker malts add a smooth flavour, not a strongly roasted or burnt character. Drinkability is a fundamental aspect of this beer style.
Most of them are moderate in intensity: the balance and overall impression of an American IPA with restrained roast similar to that found in Schwarzbier. Without the roasted-burnt character of American Porter and Stout, with less body and greater smoothness and drinkability.
