Barreled Souls Brewing Company is a brewery from Saco, Maine, founded in 2014 by childhood friends Chris Schofield and Matthew Mills. Schofield, a homebrewer since 2002 with professional brewing experience, took on the role of head brewer, while Mills brought his background in hospitality, wine and beverage management.
The project began with a primary fermentation system in oak barrels inspired by the historic English Burton Union. That connection with wood became one of the brewery's defining features, especially in Imperial Stout and Barleywine aged in bourbon and whiskey barrels. Its range also includes sours and IPA, although Barreled Souls is especially known for dark, high-strength beers matured for long periods in barrels.
