Grape Ale

Grape Ales (grape beer) are a hybrid style that fuses beer and wine production techniques. These beers  incorporate grapes, grape must or grape juice during fermentation, resulting in a beer that combines brewing characteristics with the aromatic and flavour nuances of wine. Originating in Italy, Grape Ales usually show moderate acidity, fruity and vinous aromas, and good carbonation.

Their base is similar to several Belgian styles, such as Belgian Blond, Saison and Belgian Single, but with grapes.

Italian origin: an experiment with wine-growing roots

Grape Ale originated in Italy, where craft brewers began incorporating grapes into beer production. In regions known for wine production, such as Piedmont or Tuscany, local grapes found a new purpose, creating a beer with vinous characteristics that surprised both brewers and consumers.

Mixed fermentation, where brewing and winemaking meet

What makes most Grape Ales special is mixed fermentation. In many cases, both beer yeasts and wine yeasts are used, adding unique complexity. In addition, some versions may include lactic bacteria, introducing a subtle acidic touch similar to what we find in certain natural wines.

Infinite grape variety, infinite flavour variety

Depending on the type of grape used - white, red, sweet, acidic - the beer profile changes radically. This means no two Grape Ales are alike: some may have fresher and fruitier flavours, while others contribute darker, sweeter or even spicy nuances.

Balance between sweetness and acidity

What surprises when drinking a Grape Ale is the balance it achieves between fruitiness and acidity. Grapes add a natural sweetness not commonly found in "traditional" beer, but they can also bring acidity that cuts through that sweetness, creating a fresh and vibrant palate experience.

The story of the first recognised Grape Ale

Although it is impossible to identify a single Grape Ale as "the first", one of the most notable examples in modern history is Birra del Borgo in Italy, one of the pioneering breweries in this style.

Vibrant colours that surprise the eye

Depending on the type of grape used, they can range from bright gold to pinkish or reddish tones, even dark purples. This makes them especially attractive beers for serving at events or for those who enjoy both the visual aspect and the flavour of the drink.
