Target is a British variety developed by Wye College in the 1970s as a high-yield hop with high alpha acid availability. It is grown mainly in the United Kingdom and has established itself as one of the standard varieties for bitterness contributions in traditional English styles.
In analytical terms, Target usually has alpha acids between 9% and 14%, with an essential oil content dominated by myrcene, humulene and caryophyllene. Its aromatic profile combines earthy, spicy and herbal notes, with occasional presence of citrus nuances depending on the lot and post-harvest treatment.
Its brewing application covers both early additions —for its solid and stable bitterness— and more limited aromatic uses, especially in Bitter, ESB, Porter, Stout and other British ales. It is a functional, consistent and well-documented hop within the English tradition.
