Millennium hop is valued for its strong bittering capacity and its moderate aromatic profile: it does not offer aromas as prominent as some other hops, but it provides subtle notes of earth, flowers, resin and citrus, making it useful in combination with more aromatic hops.
Millennium has a high alpha acid content, between 14.5% and 16.5%, allowing it to provide clean and effective bitterness, ideal for beer styles such as American IPAs, Stouts and Barleywines. This high level of bitterness is perfect for balancing the sweetness of malts.
It was developed collaboratively by the USDA and Oregon State University, released to the market in 2000 as a high-alpha alternative to Nugget hop.
