East Kent Goldings (EKG) is one of the most studied varieties of Humulus lupulus within the group of British aroma hops. Originating from historic cultivars in the East Kent region, it has a moderate alpha acid content —usually between 4% and 6%— and an essential oil profile dominated by humulene, caryophyllene and farnesene in characteristic proportions.
Beers brewed with EKG usually show volatile compounds associated with floral, earthy and slightly spicy notes, resulting from the expression of its main terpenes. Its contribution to bitterness is stable and moderate in intensity, with low presence of aggressive compounds due to its reduced cohumulone content.
