Centennial hop is distinguished by combining floral and citrus notes, with particular emphasis on lemon and orange blossom, together with pronounced bitterness. This is attributed to its complex spectrum of terpenes such as myrcene and farnesene. This combination of aromas makes it a favourite for beers seeking a classic and refreshing touch.
Developed by the USDA and released in 1990, Centennial is a hybrid of Brewer's Gold, Fuggle, East Kent Golding and others, and is known as the "Super Cascade" for its aromatic intensity and robust bitterness. Its alpha acid content ranges between 9.5% and 11.5%, with total oil content generally varying between 1.5 and 2.5 ml/100g. This profile makes it ideal for styles such as American IPAs and Pale Ales, where a balance between bitterness and clear aromatic notes is desired.
