Citra hop stands out for its intense aromatic profile combining citrus notes, stone fruit and tropical nuances, with a subtle woody background. This character is due to its rich terpene composition such as myrcene, which imparts vivid fruity aromas, and limonene, which adds citrus notes.
Developed by Hop Breeding Company and released in 2007, Citra is a hybrid of several varieties, including Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Tettnang and East Kent Golding, together with other American varieties. Its high alpha acid content, which varies between 11% and 13%, and a high essential oil level, approximately 2.2 to 2.8 ml/100g, make Citra exceptionally effective for both bittering and aromatization; this richness in fruity aromas makes it a favourite for beers seeking a vibrant and juicy aromatic profile.
