AleSmith Brewing Company, originally established in 1995 in San Diego, California, is a fundamental institution in the history of North American craft beer. Its catalogue includes references that have defined their respective styles worldwide, with Speedway Stout as its masterpiece: an Imperial Stout with coffee that combines density, deep chocolate notes and an intense roasted profile, maintaining remarkable balance despite its 12% alcohol content.
Although the brand was born in the 1990s, its current identity and global expansion were forged after its acquisition in 2002 by Peter Zien. Zien brings an uncommon credential in the industry: he is a BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) "Grand Master" Judge, the only owner of a brewery of this size with such a level of technical certification.
For the expert connoisseur, AleSmith's differential value lies in its sophisticated barrel-aging programme and its handling of adjunct ingredients. They are pioneers in the treatment of Imperial Stouts, launching annual variants of Speedway Stout with specific-origin coffees (such as the Vietnamese or Jamaican versions) and maturations in rare spirits barrels that are highly coveted by collectors.
